Bay Area and Berkeley’s own John M. Letiche started life as Ianik Letichevsky, a citizen of the newly constituted Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The son of a brilliant but dictatorial father and a loving, cultivated mother, he went on to a remarkable career as an accomplished scholar, professor of economics, and adviser to governments.
Letiche, now in his nineties, provides an intriguing look at the changes that have occurred during his lifetime. Following his Kiev childhood and formative years in Depression-era Montreal, he completed a doctorate at the University of Chicago and took up a Rockefeller fellowship at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City. As a technical advisor to the Economic Commission for Africa he conducted trade talks with both gifted and corrupt heads of state in sub-Saharan Africa, and later shared a working White House dinner with an infamous American president.
His half-century-long teaching career at Berkeley included a front row seat for the Free Speech Movement and the most documented student revolt in popular history. Told with humour, insight, and humility, Crises and Compassion moves nimbly among weighty events and meaningful personal history, showing how “civility in intellectual exchange” came to be the guiding principle of a life of monumental experiences (Amazon)

“Dr. Jack Letiche’s twentieth century journey instructs, entertains, and inspires the reader who will finish the book better off on any account, but above all for the time spent with the life and mind of a great thinker and global citizen.” (Jeremy Kinsman, Canadian Ambassador or High Commissioner in Moscow, Rome, London, and Brussels, and Regents’ Lecturer 2009-10, University of California, Berkeley )
5.0 out of 5 stars More than Economics – Professor’s Memoir A Real Life Rags to Riches Adventure, March 19, 2011 By Burt Kaufman
“What a read! What a Life – and it seems a long way from over for renown Berkeley Economics Professor John Letiche! Now in his early 90s, Letiche has written his fourteenth book, his fascinating memoir recounting an almost unbelievable journey from a childhood in Russia, rife with anti-semitism, to adviser to world leaders.
The book reads almost like an adventure story in its real life drama, including a serendipitous marriage proposal, an eye-opening meeting with President Nixon and, later, historic conferences with the Council on Foreign Relations. One might expect a book written by an economics professor to be very technical but this book, written sans ghostwriter, is easily readable for all ages and education levels. Letiche has a very colorful, yet concise writing style.
This is less a tome on economics than a real life story one must read to appreciate. It might even affect your own life.

2010 WORLD SERIES – FROM BANJO HITTERS TO WORLD BEATERS IN ONE EASY STEP
THIS ONE WAS FOR EARLY
GIANTS
Mays , McCovey and the ’60s Giants Deserved a World Series Victory more than this current crop, so at least they could share in this one. They were the REAL WINNERS – those 1962 era Giants, who never knew steroids back then.
GIANTS HAVEN’T LEARNED – 10 YEAR S LATER
Eight years later the Giants haven’t learned. The Giants knew about Jose Guillen’s past use of steroids (Mitchell Report), not the neck injury they gave as the reason for leaving him off the team.
Now we see Jose Uribe having his best homer year at age 33 in a homer -unfriendly ballpark, and newly acquired cast-off, veteran outfielder Cody Ross, who only hit only 11 homers in 487 at bats with the Florida Marlins, has hit 8 homers with the Giants in roughly 100 at bats since coming to the Giants; that’s one homer for roughly every 12 at bats,
Now Cody Ross and Reteria are suspect. Look at the numbers @ http://www.RoadToSuccess.us As a team, the Giants have gone from a .500 plus team at All Star Break to having the best record in baseball the past two months, finishing twenty games over .500 since Ross and Guillen came along.
Need we say more. Or, does anyone care?
AND, NOW SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE… THOSE PARADOXICAL GIANTS FANS CAN RELISH IN THEIR ‘MEDICAL MARIJUANA, SO PREVALENT AT AT&T PARK DURING THE WORLD SERIES… HERE’S YOUR T-SHIRT:
World Champs or Bladerunners? Giant pitchers Romo and Wilson
In the fifth and final game, it was Cody Ross who got a single, Juan Uribe who got a single, and then Edgar Renteria who hit the three-run- homer in the seventh inning to give the Giants enough to win the game and their first World Series in 56 years and since coming to San Francisco. These are the three key ‘S- guys’ in the Giants lineup that won the World Series. Maybe stole is a more appropriate term, as noted in a previous blog. Suddenly, Ross became Babe Ruth or, better, Barry Bonds for the World Series, playoffs and last month of season, hitting 7 homer and three in his first 6 at bats in the playoffs after hitting only 11 homer the entire year; this at age 30 , playing in the hitter-unfriendly AT&T Park in San Francisco. Without those three , the Texas Rangers would have probably won game 5, 1-0. Uribe never hit 25 homers in his 12 year career but he did it at age 33, playing, again, in San Francisco’s spacious, cold ball park, with September his best month and hitting two homers in the playoffs and Series. Uribe has been a known defender of steroids (note May 09 interview where he defended Latin players for using steroids.) Renteria was given up for dead, the subject of much derision by Giants fans and one of GM Sabean’s many criticized trades until September, when Renteria also came to life. He had his best month , by far, hitting two of his three homers of the year in the playoffs and World Series. Some criticized Ranger’s Washington for not walking Renteria to get to Aaron Rowand in that fifth game, with two men on base. But, on paper, Renteria had been the weakest link – if you took the whole season into account. Seems that the Giants great hitting all began in September – after a known Steroid user, Jose Guillen, was brought in by the Giants; suddenly half the team got better. Few gave the Giants a chance against better teams like the ______________________________ SF GIANTS WORLD SERIES T-SHIRTS and Products – Discount Bulk Rates- Holiday Gifts = Click here ____________________ Rangers and Phillies, but , they won it all with their weakest team to make it to the World Series in San Francisco (also ’89 and ’02, which they lost). Some call it destiny and some say the Giant pitching was enough to get them through and others say they peaked at the right time. We say just look at the numbers, especially on a team known for looking the other way in the most tolerant city. The same guys who defended Bonds for his ‘flaxseed oil’ that gave him the new homerun record , by a long shot, in 2002 – and perhaps if not for Game of Shadows might still be the only guy hitting splash homers into the Bay at ATT – are running this team, GM Brian Sabean and president Larry Baer . After 56 years of futility in San Francisco, even with players like Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Gaylord Perry, Juan Marichal and Will Clark, a bunch of virtual no-name players , guys with little or no track record, suddenly give the Giants the world series with Sabean and Baer , currently the longest active management of any major league team. We believe Sabean and Baer were so desperate to ‘get the monkey off their back’ they would do most anything to win, including bringing in players who use steroids. The most obvious one is Jose Guillen, who even made headlines during the World Series, when a New York Times reporter broke the story that he was kept off the Giants playoffs roster. The Giants had earlier said it was due to Guillen’s ‘stiff neck’ until the new story came out that a probe had found HGH drugs being circumvented to Guillen’s wife, in the Bay Area. Guillen, the known user, found twice to have used steroids, in 2002 and 2005 in the Mitchell Report, was brought to the team for the Giants stretch drive. Like Ross and Uribe, he was a player at the end of career that no other team seemed to want. Guillen , himself, had a number of key hits during September, bad neck or not – enough by himself to probably mean the difference between the San Diego Padres and Giants winning the tight Western Division race. But the key here is that AFTER Guillen got to San Francisco these other guys – Ross, Uribe and Renteria – – became superstars , not to mention half of the team suddenly heating up . Matt Cain, with perhaps his best month of his pitching career. Guillen got caught while these other guys haven’t, but the damage was done. Call it guilt by association. And, just wondering, why did these three guys all come out in their knit caps for the parade on an unusually warm 70 degree day for the Giants parade November 3? Just wondering. It would just be too much of a coincidence for all this to happen – for the Giants to suddenly go from a .500 team at All Star Break, with the same pitchers, (plus Baumgartner , who wasn’t THAT much better than Zito, who had his best year yet with the Giants) to a near .800 team with the best record – and most homeruns- in baseball the last month of the season!
GUILLEN KEY TO SEASON and WORLD SERIES
Little was made of Guillen’ s ‘hiccup’ with the Giants – a mere hiccup for Giants fans, who , like the rest of San Francisco, are overly tolerant when it comes to drug use and most anything – note the funny smell pervading ATT during the series. Even with the Giant’s track record of bringing in players nobody wanted – probably for any number of good reasons – fans and even media overlooked Guillen and the
rest; we almost did, too, until the Guillen incident hit the press and it was déjà vu all over. While it was a blip on the radar screen for most , just as was Bonds’ homer streak until two writers finally put an end to that, we found more to this story, after doing a little fact checking . And there are a few others out there who feel the same way about these Giants . Perhaps the lowest World Series TV viewership in history also points to this, despite San Francisco’s adoration of its team – no matter what! Like the recent election where San Francisco and California are an anomaly, so are the Giants to the rest of baseball. Will anything come of this? Probably not. Writers went go back home scratching their heads as to how the Giants could beat the better team they predicted to win. Bud Selig went back home after stating his satisfaction with the TV numbers, despite being 25% down from last year after the first two games. Outside of San Francisco, the series was a blip and probably many won’t be able to even tell you who won the series a year from now. So, life goes on, and so does
baseball, but nothing like I remember in 1989 and 1962, as a young boy at my first World Series with REAL PLAYERS like Mays and McCovey. Nice those guys are still around to get some attention for themselves, but deep down, you have to wonder what they’re thinking, especially coming off seven years of Barry Bonds. Say it ain’t so, Joe, but I’m afraid it is. For more Giants and Baseball 2010 style go to http://www.RoadToSuccess.us
If nothing else, we’re glad the Giants got to the World Series for at one thing:It gave the classy veteran Giants, Mays, McCovey and their ilk, perhaps one last, deserving national stage to showcase these greats from another era and from much better Giants teams that never won a World Series – before the new playoff structure came about where teams can make it with less talent over the short term – and – before steroids.
Note the lack of interest in this world series anywhere but San Francisco? With the lowest TV ratings in World Series history- Commissioner Selig said he was happy with the 25% decrease in viewership- and lack of press coverage, one has to wonder and notice. Baseball may not be what it once was, but the Giants aren’t the toast of baseball either – outside of SF.
1) Giants suddenlywent from a .500 team at all-star break to .800 rest of season , with most victories in league the second half of season with only additions of Jose Guillen* and Cody Ross* ( Buster Posey was brought up from minors, though Molina was having a good season) and then there was also a new ‘throwaway’ third baseman. Mike Fontenau(sp) from the Cubs.
2) Giants team went from among the teams with fewest home runs to most homeruns in league during September, after Jose Guillen joined the team, and this coming at one of the worst ballparks in which to hit homeruns.
3) Jose Uribehas hit the most homeruns of his career this year ( 25 ) at age 33 , playing in a unfriendly-hitters ball park. He also defended latin players on steroids in an interview May 2009.
4) *Cody Ross*hit 7 homeruns in less than 100 at bats since coming to the Giants in August, including three homers in his first 6 at bats in the playoffs. These are Bonds and McGwire –like stats of homers per at bat, roughly 1 home for every 12 at bats since joining the Giants.
6) *During his short month time with the Giants, Jose Guillen* had several key hits to win games, probably more than enough to close the two game gap between the Giants and the San Diego Padres to give the Giants the NL championship. The acquision by the Giants of the known-steroid user (in 2002 and 2005, Mitchel Report) may alone have propelled the Giants into the playoffs and potential World Series.
7) If GM Brian Sabean was willing up pick up a known ‘dirty player’ like Guillen – with a bad attitude to boot, and then deride the media for bringing it up, there’s no telling who , among the other cast-offs-or regular players- might be dirty. Sabean has had a 10 year-plus track record of bring in players ‘ at any cost’ that other teams didn’t want, for obvious reasons.
8.) A weak-hitting Giants (until the last month) manhandled the American League’s top pitcher, Cliff Lee, not once but twice in the WS, in their park, after he never lost a game to better hitting teams in nearly 10 previous playoff games? Same holds true for the Giants beating virtually every other top pitcher they faced lHaliday, Oswald, Hamils, etc.)
9.) Body changes and unusal habits: In addition to the aforementioned Cody Ross’s stats, we are told Ross gained a significant weight recently. This is hearsay, as I haven’t really seen a picture of him as he doesn’t do many interviews; sudden weight gain can be a sign of steroid use, especially in sports figures where normal weight gain is unusual; some reports on same thing happening to Edgar Renteria; the latest hitting star of the Giants and WS Most Valuable Player had been dead in the water the past several seasons, and at an advanced baseball age suddenly hits two homers in World Series after hitting only one all season!. And, what about Jonathan Sanchez going to his mouth on a regular basis while pitching?
10 .) The Giants are the only team to win the World Series after only being in first place as few as 37 games during the season. You may be able to fool stats in short series but the numbers clearly favored the Rangers over Giants in the 7 –game World Series – by a lot; same for Philadelphia over the Giants in the 5-game playoffs. In a short three game series , or even five, luck can play more of a part, but in a seven game series the better team almost always wins, yet the weaker team
won this time, and by a big margin in only 5 games – and in the opponents home park.
Bonus #11) RENTERIA – Just as we were about to bring up Renteria as the next possible Giants user, based on his sudden improvement during September and October, after a totally lackluster several years with the Giants and object of much derision and trade bait. One homerun all season. Then, suddenly a good ‘Guillen’ last month and then he hits not one but two homers in the world series including the winning homerun! Too much.
STEROIDS
Just too many factors above pointing at a world series stoen by the giants. It’s not a scientific fact yet, other than Guillen’s use but a little more investigation could and should bring out the facts.
Could there be a connection between Guillen’s joining the team and the Giants stepped-up performance in September? Could he have shared his stuff with his Giants friends, much like Bonds did before? Maybe other Giants already had theirs. There have been allegations on the internet that Ross was a steroid user, -not to count that as fact, but often where there’s smoke there’s fire. We’re just adding up all the pieces and when you put them together it doesn’t look good for the Giants and baseball, unless you’re one of those Giants fans who never cared that Bonds was using and probably don’t care now.
San Francisco has become an Sanctuary now for wayward ballplayers just as it is for wayward people, homeless, drug users, etc. But that doesn’t make it right. More steroids
The contrast between the cities of Dallas and San Francisco is startling.
GIANTS MANAGEMENT STILL HASN’T LEARNED OR DOESN’T CARE….
S.F. GIANTS: MORE THAN
SMOKE AND MIRRORS – NEW
DISTURBING FINDINGS
Certainly, with its history of having the most users during the Steroid Era, you’d think the Giants powers-that-be would at least check out their new ‘castoffs’ better. Jose Guillen, who we now learn was having HGH circumvented to him through his wife at the end of this season, is a classic case of a guy other teams don’t want that the Giants pick up, i.e. damaged goods. Same management, same scenario involving at least six Giants players later implicated for using steroids (MItchelll Report) during the 2000’s, including Barry Bonds and Marvin Bernard who, by the way, just personally admitted to using steroids while helping the Giants to their 2002 entry into the World Series; the Giants had the moxie , the nerve to invite these guys back to help them celebrate the 2010 version of the world series in San Francisco . Call it the steroid reunion, not a great tradition the Giants have brought back on themselves while they trying to win its first World Series in 56 years.
Do people care? Certainly the Giants management doesn’t seem to, while bringing back known steroid users to help celebrate; Bonds threw out the first ball in game two of the series, while suggesting he be the new hitting coach. Certainly the fans in San Francisco have never cared and would probably be delighted to see him coaching. Witness the ovation for Bonds at the game, only months before his perjury trial for lying about using steroids. But, around the country and world we’re not so sure the others don’t care. The Giants are probably the most disliked team in the majors , perhaps largely for leading the lead majors in ‘roided and illegally drugged players – which continues to this day.
The Giants were well aware that Guillen
was a twice fingered steroid user (Mitchell Report), in 2002 and 2005 when they acquired him for their stretch drive in August. When he was mysteriously left off the team playoff roster, the Giants said it was due to a neck injury. We now learn , through the diligent work of New York Times reporters, that Major League Baseball pressured the Giants not to use Guillen in the playoffs and World Series. Giant’s head men Larry Baer and GM Brian Sabean have come up some great excuses as they continue to win at any cost, pursuing the ‘rare window of opportunity’ this year. Guillen had been a significant factor in bringing the Giants to this year’s WS , with a number of key hits in September.

Now, eight years later the Giants haven’t learned. For them, its ‘win at any cost.’ And, it may not be over. ‘ The feared beards’ of 2010 may be fun, but there may be more serious stuff lurking behind them . As a result of the new Guillen allegations we decided to look more closely at some other numbers – and players. Two cases in point, to go along with Guillen:
Giant shortstop Jose Uribe, who in May, 2009 defended Latin players for using steroids, has himself hit more homers this year (24), at age 33 in a large, cold homer-unfriendly ball bark ( San Francisco’s AT&T) than at any other time in his career.
Newly acquired cast-off, veteran outfielder Cody Ross, who only hit only 11 homers in 487 at bats with the Florida Marlins, has hit 8 homers with the Giants in roughly 100 at bats since coming to the Giants; that’s one homer for roughly every 12 at bats, certainly Bonds territory. His remarkable 3 homers in his first 6 career playoff games puts him in a rare class achieved by only a handful of big time players and a number of known and suspected steroid users. Since then, he’s hit another homer in game three World Series games and his last out, a half hearted swing against reliever Felice nearly went out of the park. Ross’ .288 batting average since coming to the Giants, is the highest in his career other than 2006 when he played in only 66 games. This for a guy in his thirties, playing in a large , cold, hitter-unfriendly ballpark.
FROM BALCO AND BONDS TO GULLEN AND THE WORLD SERIES
GENETIC FREAK BASEBALL JERSEY – CELEBRATE 10 YEARS OF BALCO POWER
As a team, the Giants have gone from a .500 plus team at All Star Break to having the best record in baseball the past two months, finishing twenty games over .500. It’s interesting that sudden upsurge has happened after the additions of Ross and Guillen .
Certainly it is without intent to convict anyone in the media, however, we feel it’s important to at least bring up questions. That’s what the media is for. People can do what they want with this information. For us, it brings up new concerns about the Giants – especially when they can influence, and probably already have , something as important as the world series . Baseball itself, led by commissioner Bud Selig, who may still not be doing enough to clean up remaining drug tracks. (As an aside, Selig has said nothing on the Guillen issue; he’s been more intent on congratulating baseball and FOX for the 25% drop in TV viewership during the first two games of the series.
I’ve been a long-suffering Giants fan, too, since 1962. I went to that series but don’t remember anyone using steroids. But, I have trouble following them anymore, especially with this latest news. Some may turn a blind eye , but we remember and prefer a more natural style of honest, old-school baseball and we hope there are others out there that are just as concerned as we are. May some investigative reporters dig into this story to bring out the real truth about the Giants and Steroids in 2010 , just as those two Chronicle reporters broke the Bonds story some years ago. More info at http://www.SaverSuper.info and http://www.YellowPagesCoupons.ne
If the San Francisco Giants win the World Series Texas fans shouldn’t feel like their team let them down.. The best team wasn’t necessarily the winner, in fact, probably not. We’ll explain.
Giants fans and media are reveling in the startling Giants run of success of late, but they are also angry that their team isn’t getting credit , nationally. They were calling the Giants the ‘Rodney Dangerfield’s of baseball’ on the local sports talk show Sat afternoon before the third game of the World Series. In fact most pundits, NATIONALLY, see the rather obvious fact that the Giants are not the better team. Yes, yes, they’ve suddenly become world beaters during three rounds of olayoffs – and the last month of the season; Giants had the best overall record in baseball the past two months.

One must ask the question ‘How did this come about?’How did a team barely above .500 suddenly become a .800 winning team, finishing 20 games above .500?? How has this team been beating the much stronger hitting teams like Philadelphia and Texas without any real changes? The acquisition of one journeyman player, Cody Ross, could not make all the difference. In fact, the Giants have a veteran team, and older players usually tail off somewhat near the end of the season. Not the Giants.
Players like Juan Uribe , Edgar Renteria and even Jose Guillen, while he was with the Giants right up to October, showed an upsurge in hitting, especially in power – for guys in their thirties, playing in a large, cold ballpark never friendly to any power hitter, except, yes, Bonds. Uribe had also made a statement , May, 2009, defending steroid use, especially among struggling Latin players. As for Giants pitchers, I’d like to think its less likely that any of them might be using enhancing drugs , but , again, they’ve all come on stronger than ever, too, this past month. One simply must question, especially with the Giants track record of having the most implicated drug users in all of baseball over the past decade, including Guillen just the past month.
